Tony Leavitt, president of the USD 257 Board of Education, told the Register he would not seek re-election this fall.
Leavitt, a 1970 graduate of Iola High School, will complete his second four-year term in early January.
The filing deadline for school and city elections, with the Legislative-ordered change of elections to November, is noon June 1.
Leavitt said he thought it was time for someone else to have the opportunity to serve on the board in position No. 4.
He is retired from being plant manager of Herff-Jones, and his wife, Barbara, is retired from a long career at Allen Community College. They want to devote more time to family and personal pursuits.
The No. 4 position is composed of Bassett and that part of Iola bounded by South and East streets and the south and east city limits.
If more than two people file for the position, a primary election Aug. 1 would reduce the field to two. The general election is Nov. 7.
Two other members are up for election this year, Buck Quincy and Darrel Catron. Jennifer Coltrane has filed for Catron’s position No. 6 seat.

SEVERAL others have filed:
Iola: mayor, Jon Wells; council, Gene Myrick, Third Ward.
Bassett: mayor, Larry Crawford; council, Connie Alexander, Erick Alexander, Olivia Alexander, Carol Crawford, Mark Dozier.
Humboldt: mayor, Nobby Davis; council, Cindy Holinsworth, Second Ward, position 3.
LaHarpe: council, Sharlyn Thompson.
USD 256: Bill Bigelow.
USD 258: Kevin Heisler, Kristal Julich.
Gas: council, Mark Henry.
Moran: council, Chad Lawson.
No one has filed for any of three opening on the ACC Board of Trustees, or for mayoral and council positions in Elsmore and Savonburg.
Filing must be done in the Allen County clerk’s office, which is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The office will be closed Monday for Memorial Day.
